Newbridge Youth Vs Cwmbran Youth

18th January 2020

Newbridge RFC Youth 27 – 22 Cwmbran RFC Youth

Well it was a tough day at the office for everybody yesterday.

We had all woken to a thick frost in the morning that had put the game in doubt due to the early kick off, but the winter sunshine had done its job and we arrived at a pitch that could only have been called soft to heavy if it was at a racecourse.

After changing at the Newbridge Leisure Centre for the 12.00pm kick off we could have done with some horses as we set off on our trek to the pitch, we had a pitstop as we walked past McDonalds were I was tempted to get a Big Mac and fries as I was not sure when we would eat again, then it was under the dual carriageway and through the paddy field, before we finally arrived at our destination.

First Half

The game started as an even encounter with the usual passages of play and forwards battles, both teams struggling to find touch with their early kicks as the ball took on more water than the players.

Newbridge 0 – 5 Cwmbran

Cwmbran were first on the scoresheet following a typical driving run from Lewis Thomas, the ball was recycled and passed along the line, Jermarie Chatham (13 mins) going over the line in the left-hand corner.

Newbridge 5 – 5 Cwmbran

Newbridge (16 mins) were quick to respond, a break down their left wing, stopped by the Cwmbran defence, recycled and a drive over the line.

Newbridge 10 – 5 Cwmbran

Newbridge (25 mins) took the lead, they chased down the ball as it was kicked towards the right corner and following some indecision by Cwmbran, Newbridge kicked it along the floor to score.

Newbridge 10 – 12 Cwmbran

Cwmbran quickly came back with a converted try, Jack Maloney (31 mins) stepping through the Newbridge defence to score under the posts and then gain the extra points by putting over the conversion.

Newbridge 13 – 12 Cwmbran

As the first half came to a close, Cwmbran were penalised for offside on their own 22 metre line and Newbridge (35 mins) popped over the penalty to go ahead at the break.

Second Half

The second have started slowly with both teams feeling the fatigue as the heavy pitch took its toll.

Newbridge 13 – 19 Cwmbran

Cwmbran were first to score, a delicate chip over the top had the Newbridge defence scrambling for the ball as it rolled around on the floor two metres from their line, Ethan Hayes (53 mins) quick to spot the opportunity picked up the ball and spun around to score. Deian Mallet Rees putting over the conversion.

Newbridge 20 – 19 Cwmbran

As the game went to and fro, Newbridge (64 mins) struck next as they stepped through three tackles to score under the posts for a converted try.

Newbridge 20 – 22 Cwmbran

Cwmbran hit back immediately, Jack Maloney (66 mins) kicking a sublime penalty from 25 metres. (If he tells you it was 35 metres just nod your head and agree, that’s what I did when he tried to convince me, but hey I’m writing the report).

Newbridge 27 – 22 Cwmbran

Back came Newbridge (69 mins) following a number of build-up phases to make their way up the pitch they passed the ball quickly off the ruck to step through the now tired Cwmbran defence to score under the posts.

As the referee indicating that it was the last play of the game, Cwmbran had a lineout on the Newbridge five metre line, as the lineout was taken the referee blew for an infringement and it was game over.
